My list of tips begin with light reading and music. Take an fully charged ipod full of your favourite tunes helps the boredom. I also opt for an interesting magazine, where if there are a lot of interruptions I can easily finish an article, or find my place back in an article. I am amazed at how some people can read a novel or textbook on the flight. That's not for me, I like how a magazine is something that if I lose it, I don't have to worry. Or can ditch it when I finish it. Also these 2 items ipod and magazine add nothing to my packing. Some trips I go without a carry on.

But that's not my biggest pastime. Long flights are made for catching up on sleep. Just make sure you have a window seat and lean against the wall. It fits in well with getting up early for all the airport lineups and staying up late packing and other last minute tasks. Even on the return trip, why not spend more late night time with loved ones, instead of wasting your vacation time sleeping when you can do that on the flight? If the flight is early enough and the late night late enough, I have opted for all nighters.

Look out of the window

Read a book

Play a game on your phone or iPad

Listen to music

Watch the in flight movie/entertainment

Try and make a tower out of some playing cards on your meal tray

Look at the map in the flight magazine and try to work out where you are

Estimate what time you will land in your own head and put a countdown timer on your phone (See how far out you are).

Order some drinks

Order some snacks

Read a magazine

Buy some duty free treats

Talk to your family/friends/fellow passengers

Walk up and down the isles

Whistle a tune and see if the other passengers join in

Sing a tune and see if the other passengers join in

Twiddle your thumbs

Have a sleep or rest your eyes

Write a story

Do some work on your laptop or by hand

Finish some emails

Review how good or bad the flight is on your laptop

Stretch your muscles and joints in the isle to keep the blood circulating

Just don't do all of these in the same flight as you may become known for being the most annoying passenger of all time

This is the same way I deal with long car rides when I don't have to drive. In fact, it works for any situation where you have to deal with stationary boredom.

#1 Arrange to leave on your trip relatively early in the morning. Saturday or Sunday morning is the perfect day of the week.

#2 Meet friends out at a bar or a club.

#3. Drink steadily and with a purpose all night. It needs to be steady, but not too intense.

#4. At bar close, get enthusiasm going for an "after bar" party.

#5 Attempt to keep the action going until the sun comes up.

#6 Go out to breakfast and eat a bog greasy meal.

#7 Get a ride to the airport.

#8 Sleep the entire way to your destination.

This will not only make the flight painless, it will help fight jet-lag since your sleep cycle has already been thrown off.

It's the same approach rock stars have been using since the '60s. If it works for Keith Richards, it's good enough for me.

Different things suit different people. However, I usually prefer a fully charged electronic device -(can be a cellphone, iPod, iPad, etc.) Have a lot of games and music on the device. (If you plan to sleep during the flight, have soothing music). Oh! Sleep! A wonderful way to keep you busy. Usually when you land in your destination, all your energy is drained from the flight and you are tired. Not if your body gets some rest! Sleeping also passes time. Why not! I usually can't sleep the night before an airplane trip anyways. Another thing you'll definitely need in your pocket. Gum. It ain't a pleasant experience if you ain't chewing on something while the plane is descending. Your ears feel blocked, kind of. You'll need to swallow and chew. Gum offers both of those. If your trip is long, there are usually TVs. I catch up on the latest movies, too.

On long flights the best thing to do is relax and sleep. Or listen to some music with headphones i guess.

I've been on flights as long as 17 hours, from one end of the globe to the other. And a lot of it was simply meditation or sleeping or just trying to move around.

Sitting at 1 place for too long is bad for the body. Some movement is still needed.

I am not sure if internet access or wi-fi is available on plane. If so, that's a good way to pass time.

But basically relaxation and sleep are probably the best way

a lot of long haul flights to and from UK. The outward flights were always at night which is so much better. By the time you have picked your way through one of those awful tray meals, had a gin and tonic and a mini bottle of wine, if you are lucky you will soon go off to sleep and next you know is that the stewardess will be waking you with your morning coffee nine hours later.

But the return journey by day, ... oh how horrible. I used to get restless before the plane had even reached the runway for take-off. Then I discovered audio books. A finer thing to put anyone to sleep I never found. No matter how interesting the book, factual or fiction, after ten minutes it lulls me off to sleep, and if I waken up I am fully occupied trying to refind the part where I nodded off.

These days... I carry a novel or two and my MP3 player (sorry Apple, but I won't buy your products).

I read and listen to some music until the drink cart arrives... 3 nice quick cocktails, the inflight meal and I sleep the rest of the flight if possible. My wife, daughters and I make annual flights back to the Philippines... a 15 hour flight. We splurge for 1st class so we get the "bed-seats" on those flights.

Anything less than four hours and I just read.

I remember flying back in the 1970s... the airline provided a dozen music channels and an inflight movie. No electronics back then... no Walkman, no computer, nothing.

I miss flying with the Navy (the SH-60B Seahawk)... during long patrol flights at night (two 4 hour "hops" off the boat), we'd play Trivial Pursuit over the secure data-link with the guys in Combat Control to help stay awake.

Usually, long flights provide an array of on-board entertainment options for passengers to enjoy. You may carry your i-pod and portable game devices that work great for amusement on plane. Also, nearly all such flights offer a seat-back video which can really keep you entertained and occupied. The meals that are provided in long flights tend to be pretty good and wholesome. Also, you may ask the flight staff for refreshments, beverages, etc.

I thought I'd done it all...an iOS 7 upgrade by Apple caused the inability of the book software to function, the photos I took used all the space available and I had to delete my music to accommodate the photographs. I had asked at the Apple store about photo storage at the time of purchasing the iPad and was assured "thousands"' this is not true. I even stopped at an Apple store in Innsbruck to ask for assistance in managing my space, no mention of uploading them to Yahoo Flickr or Google DropBox, I am not that savvy a user yet, but figured it out on my own during the flight. So, I was left with solitaire and editing my vacation photos for my 15 hour return flights. I was bored senseless! I'm never relying on one device again! I do enjoy my iPad, but it disappointed me big time on this vacation. ...and I'll never do an upgrade away from home again either.

Sit down, get comfortable, read the inflight magazine and see if there is anything interesting in the shop. Next, take a look around the plane and the people adjacent to you and decide which one of them is most likely to be A: an Albanian Gangster, B: a terrorist of any sort. For the duration of the flight I will continue to look up periodically to see if they are behaving suspiciously. Head down and back to the magazine, looking at all the beautiful destinations I WISH I was going to compared to the place I actually AM going to :(

iPad or iPhone out, play some apps but they're all rather boring. Normally, I would have synced a couple of films or half a TV Series to my iPad the night before. At this point I usually fall asleep and when I awaken I will ask for a drink from the air hostess. She will serve me a half-sized can of Coke at double the price of a full-sized one and give me a ghastly plastic cup with a slither of lemon to consume it with.

You could eat some rotten food, and that should give you massive diarrhea. So over the whole flight you should be very busy going back and forth to the toilet - I suppose that that's a "Kind of busy" ! It'll certainly take your mind off of the cramped conditions in the cabin, the stale low oxygen air and the turbulence.

Or buy a Nintendo DS and play video games

I don't fly much anymore, but back in the 80s I flew from NJ to LA about 4 times a year, and whenever I did, I always took a good book and my Sony Walkman with about 8-10 tapes. I never really had a problem passing the time, I would also frequently talk to allot of the other passengers on the plane.

The longest flight I ever took was 8 hours, from Honolulu to Chicago on my way back home to NJ.

Well because I'm a very passionate traveller, I love all things but to keep myself busy,

*Read- there are always plenty of magazines to choose from or i bring my own book. If you have a kindle etc you can read on there too.

*Sleep- to be honest I can never sleep on my way to a destination because I'm always so excited so I just tend to sleep on a journey back. Also a pillow or a neck pillow will sleeping on a plane a hell of a lot easier.

*Movies, tv shows etc- in flight entertainment is always available, I love kicking back in the air and watching a good movie. If you have a ipad or anything like that, explore the the world of modern entertainment!

There are so many more things to do, I guess you just have to be adventurous, eat, play games, write or draw, chat to people, (talking to people on a plane is the easiest because you know that they can't go anywhere And will be stuck with you for the rest of the flight!!) .

Hope I helped :)

For extroverts:

- Make friends with the person next to you! You'll always have something to talk about, and maybe by the time you land, you will have gained a new person to share secrets with!

- Draw! Create something new, like an invention, or make a new world, then share it with others on the flight, and encourage them to do the same.

- Try to start a sing-a-long with the people around you!

- Write a story, fan fiction, or poems, then tell people around you to do the same, and then share it in a group!

- Just try to be as social as possible!

For introverts:

- Bring many good books that you are hooked on to read.

- Write anything!

- Draw, and use your imagination!

- If there is a TV on the plane, watch movies.

- Listen to music, and discover new tunes!

You should always do whatever you know keeps you occupied for long periods of time, so by the time you land, you'll be ready for whatever comes your way!

In flight "entertainment" is worse than no entertainment, as far as I'm concerned (yes, I actually "saw" the first Matrix movie on a tiny TV screen embedded in the seat in front of me; that "cured" me of ever again wanting to watch anything on an airplane TV!). I also take crossword puzzles (the big New York Times weekend ones), a book I've meant to read (& usually don't!) and a "project" like organizing my address book in my pocket-sized agenda, something that can be done on those tiny pull down trays.

The main ones that keep me distracted from the impending boredom of death are simple things, some of these ideas other people have already suggested ,but, a good mixture of music to listen to, maybe a book or another kind of ebook, some paper and pens just to right notes or doodle.(i found that I spent two and a half hours just doodling waiting for the departure) AND THE MOST IMPORTANT - well earned rest..A busy holiday with late nights, early mornings and lots of activities will benefit to a better night sleep on the plane. lastly, one that my friend loves is cards, cards with friends or card games by yourself are a good way to pass time.

If the flight you are on doesn't give you the option to watch movies, then you could try to sleep through it. Usually on international flights, I would just sleep until meals arrive. If you can't do that then walking around periodically helps to keep your blood flowing instead of just being stagnant. You could use your laptop once you're in the air I believe as well as your phone, or other electronic device. Talking to the person next to you if you feel like they are willing to engage in conversation. You could bring a book or puzzle book before boarding. Do something to get your mind occupied and your flight won't be as uncomfortable as you thought.

When I went to China in 2012, one of the legs each way was 12+ hours long. I am returning in 2014 and it will, of course, be the same.

Time your sleep prior to the trip so that you might sleep a good portion of the flight. Depending on the timing, you might be able to minimize jet lag by doing so.

When booking flights, look for those with personal entertainment, especially on the long legs. We had that on the way to China but not on the way back. I believe they charge for short flights, but it was free on the international flight. You could watch movies, television shows, play games, listen to music...

Of course, if you have an iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc. (or the like) you can load it with your favorite entertainment and have it readily available. You can also use iBooks, Kindle, Nook apps for books and other reading material.

You can also take magazines, puzzle books, a journal.

We were well fed and had beverages (at no cost) on our flights, but you can take your favorite dry snacks on board.

If you are traveling to an international location, you can practice your language skills during the trip.

Therefore, I deliberately DO NOT attempt to keep busy on the

I can not sleep on an airplane. The only thing that saves me on long flights is the built in TV's. I watched 5 movies on one flight. Since I can't sleep, I also like to have an isle seat so that I can see what is going on and get up occasionally.

Here are some entertaining stuff you can do:

- Read a book

- Play on iphone

- Talk to the person next to you

- Share jokes with the person next to you

- Eat chips

- Draw

- Listen to music

- Watch a movie (on iphone, laptop or the tv screen infront of you if the plane has one)

- Start writing your own book/poem or any other literary works

- Play games like charades, guess the country, celebrity etc.

- Ask the air hostess for a toy or sumthing to play with... (regardless of age)

- Take a nap

- Play Sudoku or Crossword puzzles

And don't forget to smile :)

On long overnight flights going in the direction of Europe, I sleep through most of the flight. This helps eliminate jet lag when I arrive. Coming the other direction, I mostly listen to the music channels on the entertainment system and read - I always carry at least one book for trains or planes. Sometimes there will be someone sitting next to me who wants to talk - that can be entertaining and you can occasionally get good ideas of places to go and things to do that you might otherwise be unaware of.

I either read a book or buy a movie via ITunes that I can watch on my iphone or ipod on the plane. I usually don't read the book for long though, not sure if it's just me but whenever I read a book in the car or anything that's moving it just give me a headache majority of the time.

but yeah Netflix, tumblr, twitter, instragram, and vine are all my best friends on an airplane.

sometimes I listen to sad music and pretend i'm in a music video going somewhere important as I stare out into the window....

To keep busy on a long plane flight, first thing one should opt to do is to make friends with a nearby or neighbouring passenger. This way, both will be able to chat and gossip and thus will not be bored. If that person is a shy passenger, he/she should obviously take a magazine or a book to read throughout the ride. If that is not preferred, one may try to improve his/her social skills and surely get the other to talk.

If that person has a hobby, he/she may practise it during the flight. Sleeping is always a backup option but the problem is, how long a person can sleep? There is limit for that after which, we get bored of sleeping. Another thing that can be done to enhance ones plane experience is by listening to music. Some flights also provide their own entertainment features like movies on the plane etc. So if one is on such a plane, he/she is lucky!

A good thing to do for the ones who dislike reading and talking to strangers is to keep 10-20 sheets of paper(they may be any-plain or used) in your backpack and make origami models out of them. If one doesn't know how, just fold the paper and something will surely come out!!

People also buy joke-books and comic books which entertain people of all age at all times.

Out of many things that can be done on planes, one is to visit the toilets. Don't visit the toilet before the flight and then pass your time (even 5 minutes mater!!) by sitting on the seat!

Many people also try to have fun by solving mathematics or science questions while on-board. So one may take a book that has many questions and start to solve them on the plane.

Children would love to play games on the plane. For them, a laptop or portable video games would suffice. Girls may take their barbie dolls and play with them.

One can also improve their handwriting while on the plane.Take a pen/pencil and a few sheets of paper and start writing "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz" without spaces, or form meaningless words and write them. One may also consider to write some quotes of his/her own on the paper.

Another thing for the inventive ones is to draw their own 'mind-made' inventions on sheets of paper. Poem-writing is always an option for all.

Some people are not comfortable with any of the aforementioned tricks. They may either refrain from stepping onto the plane or find something else to do.

Thanks to those who read......

And, a very happy and busy long flight to those who want it!!

Mostly, I SLEEP.

Usually I'm tired anyway from staying up late the night before, packing, or, when packed, simply from "excitement", and/ or from getting up earlier than usual to get to the airport the required several hours ahead of time. And, it passes the time (seven to 10 hours depending on destination) on those long trans-Atlantic flights.
Questions

1. Use electronics. Games, movies, tv shows, even writing the drafts of emails can be done while on "airplane mode".

2. Read a good book

3. Sleep. Really makes the time go faster

4. You know all those things you get in trouble for doing at school? Doodling, daydreaming, not working? Do it now!

5. Listen to music. Go through your entire library and make a playlist of your all-time faves.
2013-10-27 05:23:43 UTC
I usually listen to music and fall asleep. If I can't sleep I read a book that I know I that is really good so I end up reading the whole book on the flight. Usually I end up buying Economy + tickets so there is a small tv in front of me where I can watch films.

I eat, play my game, watch a movie, or read. I don't like airplane food though :) Well, some of the food. Whenever I eat their food, I feel like I have a stomach. Maybe it's just the airplane rocking back and forth. I try to sleep too, but it's kinda hard for me to sleep in a chair (unless I'm next to the window). What I like best about the flight is the view. When you are up in the air, the view is so beautiful :D

Try to awaken about an hour before the flight crew serves the arrival meal/snack and use the bathroom to wash up. Also maybe change clothes. You will feel a lot better.

For the first 10-15 minutes of the flight, I just settle down and mostly stare out the window (depending on if I got the window seat). As the flight progresses, I'll bring out my iPhone and listen to music, after I get bored of that, I just fidget in my seat until the flight is over. It's not easy sitting stiff for hours on end.
2013-10-25 15:42:04 UTC
On long flights there will be a movie/music/games console in the back of the seat in front of you.

It is very easy topass away several hours by watching two movies.

Also, on international flights, it is necessary to get some sleep while flying.

I've been on many long flights across the pacific. The best way to kill time is to simply sleep. Unfortunately I have trouble sleeping on a plane so I have to tall back on electronic media, such as music or movies to pass the time. Sometimes I'm lucky and am able to strike up a conversation with the person next to me.

I usually don't sleep a night before. I get motion sick, so I take gravol that makes me sleep. I will sleep most of the flight sleeping. Rest of the time I spend it to eat, bathroom breaks, some stretch and play video games(I usually bring DS with me).

I'm used to long flights so it's not a big deal to me anymore. I will be extremely cranky if I can't sit on isle side though. I hate asking people to move so I can get out of seat to go to bathroom.

READ! I have an eBook I take along..

Last year I read all the way TO San Francisco..

and then on the way home..I read during the 5 hours we sat at the gate waiting for the Downpour to stop so the Plain could take off and the entire flight home...

I would NEVER undertake a Plain trip WITHOUT an ebook....stocked with at least 25+ novels...

Buy some duty free treats

Talk to your family/friends/fellow passengers

Walk up and down the isles

Whistle a tune and see if the other passengers join in

As the pilot I keep busy by driving the plane.

The air hostesses keep busy by serving drinks & food & looking after the customers, & also by being grateful the plane isn't crashing.

The passengers keep busy by either sleeping, or using their technology to entertain them, or using their technology to work. Or reading books, or even talking to each other. If they have a window seat they amuse themselves by looking out of the window, even taking pictures out of it.

Heaven forbid, but if they're terrorist hijackers they amuse themselves by thinking hey, I can scare all these people saying I have a bomb & I will blow you all up if your pilot doesn't agree to my demands.

Kids might amuse themselves by technology, or enjoying the view & thrill of being in a plane, or thinking of where they're going. If they're bored they might amuse themselves by having a strop.

Any flies or microbes or other creatures amuse themselves by thinking hey, I'm not evolved enough to know where I am or what's happening, but I'll just do what I do on earth, which is basically eat, avoid being eaten, & reproduce.

I travel by myself so I have to keep myself occupied. I take my laptop with me. I can get internet (on some flights), games, play DVD tv shows and movies. I bring my mp3 player with me so I can play my favorite music when I'm tired of being on the computer. Sometimes I take magazines with me to read. That usually occupies my time. I've been on flights of up to six hours in the past several years, and that is how I do it. Time goes by quickly.

By praying, intermittently, and reading the word of God. Try to meditate on what is read. For me, at my first flight, i stayed awake for almost 89% of the times through the journey cause i have difficulty going to sleep on situations like that, knowing that i am in the air.
2013-10-28 13:19:45 UTC
Sometimes people bring laptops if the flight instructor(s) will let you use them so that might be a good thing to check as you search for a light company. Also you can bring a book or another hand-held tool that interests you!

Earplugs, eye shades, First class seat that fully reclines and Valium.

My favorite way to travel long-haul was Space Available on Air Force transport planes. Sleeping bag, air mattress, heavy-duty hearing protection and the aforementioned eye shades and sleeping aids.

Since retiring from uniformed service, no longer possessing special exempt status, I choose not to fly unless in a life-or-death emergency. I have no desire to be pawed by Neanderthals who cannot or will not speak Standard English (or French). Likewise they cannot or will not read and acknowledge formal medical certificates (prepared in exact conformance to their own agency's written regulations) regarding implanted prosthetic devices. Can you say 100% strip search? Sure you can... I'm referring of course to our wonderful TSA.

If I must fly overseas, I fly out of Dorval rather than Logan: same distance but shorter time as the roads around Montreal are more sensibly laid out. The Canadian security people are professional, literate and don't resemble Homer Simpson.

(not intended to be spam) Asia? JAL or Singapore AL, Business or First: they treat you like a human being should be treated. Europe? Lufthansa or Swiss Air : same remarks. If you must fly into Paris use Air France; terminal space, baggage, customs all discriminate in favor of their flag carrier (speak French and try not to look like a typical Ugly American, your behavior and appearance will be reflected back at you in how you are treated).

Bon Voyage

I try reading but can not concentrate. I try to watch the film I'm generally bored. I listen to music but can not be bothered. I try to sleep but at best I doze. Long distance flights indeed for me any flights are something to be endured rather than enjoyed. Just think how much you are looking forward to your destination. I'm so relieved to get off the aircraft I've even been known to smile at Customs officers Security and Immigration.

One thing I did find that helped and that was seduce I really have to concentrate on that but it only worked once

Sleep passes the time like none other and gives you much needed shut eye when dealing with jet lag. Those horseshoe shaped pillows work great, I bring a small blanket , sleeping pills, and eye mask.

Other ideas are watching long movies. You can use your tablet if needed and get one of those 5-10 mah portable chargers to keep your devices charged throughout the trip. Get up and walk around a bit, bring some magazines.

Dress in comfortable clothes and shoes that are not too tight (or overly casual). Your feet will swell during a long flight and tight clothes can make it harder to sleep.

Bring a small craft to work on. I bring yarn and my crochet hook. Knitting needles may be outlawed by the air lines. This will make the time go fast, because you are focusing on a project and see the progress.

Reading is good, but can tire you eyes. Listening to music, requires extra batteries or finding an electric plug in.

Portable DVD player -films, tv shows.

Bring a couple of good books.

iPod for music.

Nintendo DS & games.

Pack of cards if I'm sitting with a friend or even just start a game with the stranger next to you...

Try to sleep, although I never can sleep while on planes, and other moving vehicles.

Eat-snacks, dinner and drinks.

Games on your phone, tablet.

That's all I can think of right now :)

1. Look out the window.

2. Eat.

3. Drink.

4. Doze (it is very rare that I ever actually go to sleep on a plane, but I do tend to doze and daydream).

5. Read. I read my own sort of thing, and that is anything dark, horroresque or fanatical, such as "Harry Potter" and some of Edgar Allan Poe's work.

6. Mess around with my iPad and/or iPhone.

7. Listen to my iPod.

8. Chat with my family.

9. Read the leaflets, sheets and/or the magazines that are kept on the plane.

10. Look at and listen to my own surroundings. I often like to listen to the background noises, people talking, babies crying (before you accuse me of being a baby-hater, I would actually rather hear them talking and/or laughing) and/or listen to the announcements.

We people always complain about the lack of time.

We will be happy if we can use this so called idle time to our benefit.

In flight one has many limitations which are not imposed on ground.

Within the limits of flight constraints, everybody can use available time for betterment

if one knows how to MEDITATE.

There many types of meditation and some of them can be performed in flight too.

ANAPAN SATI / VIPASSANA is the meditation best suited for flight times and immensely beneficial too.

I am an eternal Reader-of-people... I make an internal "reading" of personalities by how they present themselves in public. - What better stage is there than such a public setting as an airplane?

Such a setting offers people to shine their intents or hide their own miseries by how they present themselves in public and private.

Compose individual stories about each person in your flight - and then compare your stories with them in a Comic strip format; a Ziggy (single tile) story. <-This creates many varying opportunities for both you and others to learn how they impact either themselves or others.

With enough and the right practice of this, you can become renouned in your area!

Good luck.

some tips during your long trip to make you be better and fresh?

1. MP4 favorite love songs will accompany and make you stay fresh

2. Enjoy the journey by speaking with any woman/man beside you, if it's possible...tell and share your love story, who knows she/he intereted with you

3. Rember...what will you do after the plane landing at the destination station

Hopefully, it will help you stay cool and fresh

When you look at the time left on the flight, instead of thinking, "Oh, man. We still have another __ hours till we land", think, "Oh, __ hours till we land? Oh, that's not too long now" - even though it could be like 7 hours.

Just try to stay positive and not let yourself get bored. Get enjoyment from little things.

well i fly to dubai alot,, and that is emirat air, worlds 5 star airline... with over 300 tv channels, and 5000 movies 35 languages to choose from and over 100 game at ur fingertip infront of u in your seat it is pretty easy, i dont notice that 13 hours of non stop flight from Toronto to Dubai.

There's really only one way - watch movies pre-downloaded on my iPad. Same thing for train rides, too.

Before I had an iPad, it was music. But that gets kind of boring. Music is good to listen to while you're doing something else.

Well as I only fly Upper-class now I lye down and relax have a nice meal and enjoy the service Economy is horrible.

I fly and crash planes in Microsoft Flight Simulator X on my laptop.

2013-10-27 05:07:55 UTC
First I attempt to sleep, if that doesn't work I resort straight to watching any movies or TV shows they have on the plane. If that doesn't keep me interested, I then listen to music.

hey to all, i do get busy looking for new friends while at the airport, then that time i don't get bored coz i have to start knowing for whom i've meet while we are on air... keep me think and help me to reduce a sleepy mode. after the journey .. so it was good and great flight.

I used to knit, but they don't allow knitting needles and scissors aboard anymore, so now I just buy myself a few good novels -- anything by Stephen King, Tony Hillerman, Patricia Cornwell, David Baldacci -- and lose myself in escapist fantasy.

Best thing to do on a long flight is to sleep. Flying can be quite boring at times and sleeping does make the time go by much faster. Many airlines now have the personal in-flight entertainment system where you can watch movies, shows, play games or listen to music. If you are lucky enough to fly an airline that has the in-flight entertainment system, take advantage of it. Some people like to bring a hand-held video game, iPad, iPod or laptop because there are specific games or movies or music that they like. Other people like to bring books and magazines to read while those who like to be intellectually challenged will bring crossword puzzles and sudoku to keep them busy.

If you do bring a laptop or iPad, I suggest you make sure they are fully charged before you get on the plane. Most airports have outlets so you can charge your devices. A few airlines even have outlets in the back of the seat so you can charge your electronic devices.

smart phone games, video recordings, http://www.playon.com has something now called PlayLater, you can download videos from online to view offline, catch up on TV shows and such, magazines are also good, find stuff that interests you, and there's more than likely a periodical about it.
