Can I use a Passport Card to fly from California to Washington State and back?

I'm very new to the idea of traveling by flight and the information about traveling via flight using a Passport card instead of a passport book is extremely confusing to me. I would much rather get a Passport card if that's all I need since it's far cheaper but I don't want to get it only to realize I actually need the book.

The reason I'm getting a passport at all is because I guess you can't use your ID as identification to board flights anymore? or at least you can't by the time I'd be travelling to Washington State

Basically I just want to know what the title asks; Can I use a passport card to fly to Washington State and back from California?

Sorry if this seems like it has an obvious answer, again I'm extremely new to all of this and the info on their website is confusing me

YES a passport card is acceptable for ID purposes flying State to State.

It cannot be used if you wish to fly to some other country.

You DO NOT NEED TO HAVE ONE. Many other acceptable documents.

TSA.gov has a list of every form of acceptable ID. A passport card is one of them.

Also, unless you are planning on flying after October of 2018, you are probably good (assuming that you have a California licence, because CA has an extension on REAL ID compliance until then). The status of every state's IDs for REAL ID compliance is here: https://www.dhs.gov/real-id#

However, if you are going to spring for a passport, pay the couple of extra bucks and get the actual book. A passport card is only valid for very limited purposes (basically driving back from Canada or Mexico or for ID purposes).

passport cards are only for the following situations people who are traveling by land to canada or mexico and back, which used to not require a passport. Flying from cali to washington state you only need your state ID. The passport card is pointless because you cannot go anywhere with it

You don't need a passport to travel within a country. Passports are for travel to other countries. If you are over a certain age, you need a photo I.D. Check with your airline if you're under 18.

A passport card is totally fine for <> flights within the US.

A state driver's license or state ID card are also good.

For flights to any foreign country, you MUST have a passport book.

State ID, and State Drivers Licenses in the "STAR" category can be used for interstate transportation (air lines)

Planning to fly? Federal law may force you to get new driver's license
