I wish to fly to Finland from USA in July. Is it too risky to commit such a large amount of money too far ahead that cannot be refunded? If I had to cancel, I would lose quite a bit.

Thank you.

It depends how certain you are that you are going. If you have the time off for the trip and have every intention to go, I say go ahead and book it. The further out, usually the better fairs, obviously there will be some exceptions, but for the most part this is the case.

It can be costly to fly internationally, so, you have a few options. First, you could buy a ticket that is refundable. Meaning, if you cancel, you may only have to pay a fee, which isn't fun, but still a lot better than losing everything. You will pay a little more for this ticket, but worth it if you are worried. It can be hard to find refundable tickets, but they are out there.

Finally, a big thing to consider with any trip, especially with air, is trip protection. It will range in cost depending on the cost of your trip and such, your travel agent can help you with this if you use one to avoid over-paying on your coverage. This way, if you have to cancel and the reason you cancel is a reason that is covered, i.e. illness, etc. they will cover the tickets or any costs that you lose. It is a really good thing to have when traveling.

Hope this helps!

30 days or more is the cheapest. The closer to the date of travel you get the more expensive it will be. Discounts run 30 days, 14 days and 7 days. Those are the tiers for pricing. July is heavy travel season in the US, so finding something cheap will be tricky. You should start shopping now and book with in the next week or two. Some fares are refundable, but that will be the more expensive ones. If you stay away from websites like Priceline, Hotwire etc you will get more flexible fares. You can call an airline directly and they can price the more flexible or refundable fares for you. Most airlines, once you purchase a ticket you have a year to use it, but will pay a penalty for any changes plus or minus the difference in the fare. International travel will not be cheap for starters. Once you find a base fare, add about $500 in taxes and fee's to it to figure out the total cost.

It also depends on where you are wanting to go to. High tourist destinations will sell out fast, so get to it now.
