Can someone buy me a airline ticket using their frequent flyer miles?

It depends on the rules of the individual airlines.
For example, with United Airlines, if you are both a member of Mileage Plus (and it's easy and free to join up), your friend can transfer their miles to your account so you can use them.
However, there is a fee to do this.

Well, actually, no... someone cannot buy you a ticket using their frequent flyer miles - because the ticket is free anyway!
But they CAN GIVE you a ticket using their frequent flyer miles! You and they only need to pay for the taxes that's all.

Yes.. people can use their miles for tickets for whoever they want.
I buy tickets for my wife and parents all the time using my miles.
