Travel Agents?!?!?

We're planning a trip to Cancun next April (2008) and im just wondering would it be easier to do everything myself online or get a travel agent?? Would a travel agent be able to get better deals on flights, hotels, activities, etc.? Or should I not even waste my money?? Thanks in advance to all responses!!!

I´ve always arranged my own holidays for the past 15 years. I find I can get better deals myself. I research the holiday and go from there. Many holidays I´ve had have been touring holidays and I never plan too much ahead.

Travel agents are a bit like brokers. They will try and get you the best deal but try and get themselves the best deal at the same time.

If you are an inexperienced traveller then a travel agent may be your best bet.

Honestly, you would save money by using a travel agent. Travel agents make their money on commissions. They will charge fees for booking commercial plane tickets though, as airlines do not pay commissions anymore. Theres tour operators (vacation package wholesalers) who will only work with travel agents. The major ones do have public booking departments, but tend to charge more than if a vacationer had used a travel agent to book through. I've been a travel agent and have worked for a tour operator, and specialized in the Caribbean. You WILL save money using a travel agent, especially with going to Cancun. Theres alot of competition in Cancun with the many resorts, so they knock those prices way down when selling rooms to tour operators.

Research. Research. Research. Everything is relevent. A travel agent may have more knowledge of Cancun or they may not. A lot of info is available on line about Cancun if you want to put the time in. The more money a Travel agency collect from you the more percentage they get. But is best to go with them, you will get more information from them.
