So I am going to Iceland and it seems like I'll have to have a layover somewhere and then take an Icelandair plane (Boeing 757) to Reykjavik, Iceland....I looked up their fleet and their planes are old, especially the 757 which are between 18-26 years old! I am freaking out...I also found out that Boeing doesn't even make 757 anymore! I get anxious thinking about this....how do I calm down? What helps a little is that I read that the planes have been renovated...such as a state of the art glass cockpit (whatever that means) and screens on every seat...but still :(

The 757 has a great reputation for safety. The reason they are not made anymore is because they were sort of an intermediate plane that was not that a popular configuration, however, they are no older than most of the other planes you will be flying. I have flown on the 757 quite often and they are no different from many of the 737s I have also flown on of that same age.

Remember, they look after and service the planes, and the can even replace the engines completely. They are still widely used by some airlines because they are similar to other Boeing models and are reliable.

18-26 years of age is not old, but more middle-aged. Lots of airlines still fly the 757. It is a very versatile airplane. I have flown it many times. They are good for both short and long distance flights. In reality, as long as the plane is properly maintained, then you have nothing to worry about. Airlines need to follow rigorous maintenance schedules. If they don't they can be fined or have their planes grounded which generate negative publicity. Icelandair is a very safe airline so you should not have anything to worry about. My sister and her husband flew with them and had a pleasant experience.

Just so you know, Delta Airlines used to operate the DC-9 aircraft which would have been closer to 40 years of age. They have since retired them, but were inherited when they merged with Northwest Airlines.

Airplanes undergo rigorous maintenance. The 757 platform is newer than many airplanes that are still in use. The 757 works well, and they have a safety record similar to that of other airplanes.

Would you be afraid to ride in a car that old? Why not? Lots of airplanes that old, and older, are used every day. The DC-3 was first made 80 years ago and they made the last ones in the 1940s. Hundreds of them are still flying on commercial routes. Airplanes are subject to regular inspection, maintenance and repairs to make sure they are airworthy.

One of the safer airliners around and even an old one is only middle aged in terms of service life, more than half of the number built are still in regular use.

These aircraft are very well maintained and Icelandair has an excellent safety record, they have been in business for many years.

Nothing to worry about!

That is NOT old. And planes get far much more regular servicing than your car does. If it wasn't safe, it wouldn't be flying.

Do you worry every time you get into a car and drive somewhere? You should be. The death rate from auto accidents is 1 in 5,000. The death rate from airplane crashes is 1 in 11 million.

Yep. 1.in.11.million.

Your chances of dying in a plane crash are less than dying in a shark attack (1 in 3.7 million).

Relax, if the aircraft were not certified, meaning they go through intensive checks, they would not be permitted to fly. What about the 747-400, there are still a load of them flying.

They still make the 737 but many of them flying are a lot older then that
